Characters

As the story has started to grow and introduce a few new characters I decided to write a little about each one to remind readers who they're reading about as well as talk a little about why I wrote them the way I did.

Note: **If you're not caught up with the story some of these may contain spoilers.**

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Wonder

Wonder is the story's main character. S/he comes into being just as the Giants are waking up and all the other Glitchen are blinking out of existence. This story is really about his/her journey and the people s/he meets along the way.

I decided to write two versions of this story, one with Wonder being male, the other with Wonder being female because Glitchen didn't really have genders, but we as players (or readers) mentally assigned one to them if we so chose. By providing two versions of the story my hope is that readers find it just a little bit easier to identify with the character. To this end I also consciously avoided describing Wonder's physical characteristics and clothes. Glitchen varied so wildly in terms of outward appearance that I wanted to leave it open to interpretation.

Koro

Koro is Wonder's first friend in Ur. She teaches her/him about Ur as best as she can and even gives Wonder his/her name. Koro is a Rook, though she never identifies herself as such for fear of driving Wonder away. Koro is the last Rook in Ur and she feels connected to Wonder because they have both been left behind.

In the game the Rook were the evil enemies of the Glitchen and sought only to destroy what the Giants had imagined, but Koro is different. When I started writing I knew I wanted to include a Rook character as a companion because they always fascinated me. I was curious about their motives and what the story looked like from their side. I didn't sympathize with the Rook, but there was nothing that said there can't be a friendly Rook. I have also always loved the look of ravens, crows and other black birds, which is exactly what the Rook look like. I'm not sure of the actual size of the Rook in relation to the Glitchen, but for the purposes of this story Koro is about the size of a crow; a large bird, but just small enough to sit on Wonder's shoulder.

Magic Rock (Maurice)

Magic Rock meets Wonder on another Glitch's home street and agrees to come along as a traveling companion to help guide the rest of the party.

I made up the name Maurice. As far as I know Magic Rock doesn't really have a name. To be totally honest I don't know why I gave him a name; I guess the thought of Magic Rock having a regular name was funny to me. I don't even know where Maurice came from; it just sort of popped in my head. When it came time to start writing this I realized I didn't really know Magic Rock's story, and there are wildly differing opinions. In the game he was everywhere: giving quests, providing assistance, giving out iMG on player's home streets. Every player had a Magic Rock, and they all looked the same which raised the question: Was there just one really magic Rock, or did everyone have their own different Magic Rock? For the purposes of this story I went with the assumption that there is only one. Maurice. The Magic Rock.

Mr. Trinkets

Mr. Trinkets is a butler found on a Glitchen's home street along with Magic Rock. At first he refuses to shirk his duties to his master, but then agrees to come along when it becomes clear that his master is gone and he is now his own master.

Butlers were given to every player along with their home streets, and were made up of cobbled together bits from other things. They're described as being dolls, but they're as tall as a Glitch and I always imagined them more as golems than dolls or robots. They were extremely helpful in greeting visitors, relaying packages and messages, or just in letting players know what was going on in the world. Mr. Trinkets was the name of my butler and is entirely based on his appearance, though in the story he has a slightly different imagined personality. To most players butlers were more than just servants or assistants, they were friends, and that's how I've chosen to remember Mr. Trinkets in this story. As a side note Sebastian, his previous master, is entirely made up. I searched the website and didn't find any actual Glitch named Sebastian oddly enough. He isn't based on anyone.

Uncle Friendly

Uncle Friendly used to run a small Grocery in Ix until the Awakening. Now he's become the defacto leader of the Vendors who were left behind. He acts like he knows what he's doing even if he's only grasping at straws. He's willing to stoop to any level if it means protecting his land.

I don't have much to say about why I wrote in Uncle Friendly. I needed someone who was a less than nice guy and Friendly seemed to fit. I'm sorry if people are upset by him being portrayed in a not-so-flattering light, but I never thought much of him. First of all he looks mean, secondly I'm pretty sure he was ripping us off in his store. To anyone who had a special fondness for Uncle Friendly I apologize, but my portrayal of him isn't canon, so don't be too mad. Besides, he's not all bad. Deep down in his heart he really does believe that everything he does is for the good of Ur. He's misguided, sure, but not evil.

Gwendolyn

Gwendolyn is the spirit of an Ancient from the age of Cosma. She's found in Room 23 inside Jethimadh Tower and in the game she took Glitchen on a trip through their own mind. She claims she died when Grendaline took over with a great flood.

I chose Gwendolyn as the sort of "spiritual guide" because she's the oldest character you interact with in the game and it seemed that the ages of existing in Ur as a spirit had made her wise. She's intentionally a very mysterious character and I liked her for the same reason I liked the "Notice the Unnoticeable" quest line. In the story I sort of made her like the Queen of Glitch-ghosts. I don't know that there's any truth to that in the game-reality, but it made sense to me and it ties the story together a bit. Artistic license!

Desmond

Desmond is the first Piggy that Wonder wakes up and is his steadfast companion on the path back to the Tower. Piggies played such a big part in Glitch that I wanted to include one as a companion, at least near the end. The world just didn't feel right without the banter of the Piggies. Of course Desmond is slightly more intelligent than the normal Piggies around Ur, or maybe he just has a longer attention span. Either way, he showed up when Wonder needed him most, and that's what's important.
